The Snow Elf and the Variation-Lens

Mzulchond the Tonal Architect had spent twenty years attuning the great animus geode he'd found in Inner Duathand, trying to synchronize it with the precession of the dual equinoxes in order to captivate the Nirnpith Essence. The geode's vibratory affinities continued to elude him, however, so one day he threw down his attenuators, left his workshop and went to the kitchens for an infusion of chal.
As he approached the kitchen portal he heard sibilant music that cut off abruptly as he stepped over the threshold. His house-assistant, a Snow Elf maiden named Lilyarel, withdrew her hands from behind the steam-grill and looked up guiltily.
"I heard music, Lilyarel," Mzulchond said. "What did you just put behind the calorefactor?"
"It's nothing, Sir Dwarf," the maiden replied. "Just something I cobbled together to pass the time."
"What? Have you been in my device-closet again? Show me what you have there."
Reluctantly, the Snow Elf reached behind the steam-grill and drew out a fist-sized object of golden metal, crystal knobs glinting on its flange-hood. Mzulchond held out his hand, open, and Lilyarel carefully placed the object in it. "Don't drop it," she said. "It'll get de-tuned."
"Well, well," the engineer said. "So you've built yourself a crude tonal variation-lens. Is this what was playing the music I heard?"
"Yes, Sir Dwarf," the maiden said, gazing at the floor. "I hope I didn't do anything wrong."
"What, with this device? There's nothing dangerous in a melodic repeater bauble, so long as it doesn't leak bthun-waves from its volumizer. Can't have that?might interfere with the static condensers."
"Oh, don't worry, I used arkoid shielding?not very much!" she said anxiously. "But it's not a melodic repeater, Sir, it harmonizes with my mental melodies."
"Nonsense," Mzulchond scoffed. "No one knows how to synchronize a variation-lens with mental concept-cycles. It's never been done."
"I wouldn't know anything about that, Sir Dwarf," Lilyarel said, wringing her hands nervously. "I just flipped the duum-emitter so it canceled the demi-ektar-waves, and it worked just fine. Can I have it back now?"
"Hold on a dzum," the engineer said, raising a hand while he looked more closely at the gleaming device. "Flipping the duum-emitter cancels the demi-ektars? Yes ? yes, I can see how that might work. This may be just the thing I need to attune my animus geode to the Nirnpith Essence!"
As Mzulchond turned in excitement to take the variation-lens back to his workshop, the Elf maiden picked up a flipper-strut with both hands and struck him across the back of the head. The tonal architect fell dead to the ground, as Lilyarel picked up her shiny device. "Never liked him," she hissed to herself. "Always smelled like Dwemer oil."
Then she opened the brazen louvers of a vent-tube, crawled in, and began lowering herself down through the inwards of the Dwarven city. "Guess I'm going down to join the Undermer, and not coming back." And with that, she turned on her variation-lens, which immediately began harmonizing with her mental melodies.

Mzulchond l'Architecte tonal avait passé vingt années ? accorder la grande géode spirituelle qu'il avait trouvée dans la Duathand intérieure, pour tenter de la synchroniser avec la procession des doubles équinoxes, afin de captiver l'Essence de Nirnpith. Les affinités vibratoires de la géode continuaient pourtant de lui échapper, si bien qu'un jour, il jeta ses atténuateurs, quitta son atelier et alla aux cuisines pour boire une infusion de chal.
Tandis qu'il approchait du portail des cuisines, il entendu une musique sybillante qui s'interrompit lorsqu'il franchit le seuil. Son assistante de maison, une Elfe des neiges nommée Lylyarël, retira les mains d derri?re la grille ? vapeur et leva les yeux d'un air coupable.
? J'ai entendu de la musique, Lilyarël, dit Mzulchond. Qu'avez-vous mis derri?re ce caloréfacteur ?
? Ce n'est rien, messire Nain, répondit la jeune femme. Un simple passe-temps que je me suis confectionné.
? Quoi ? Tu as encore fouiné dans mon placard ? appareils ? Montre-le moi. ?
? contre-c?ur, l'Elfe des neiges sortit de derri?re la grille ? vapeur un objet gros comme le poing, de couleur doré, aux flancs évasés hérissés de clés de cristal. Mzulchond tendit la main, l'ouvrit, et Lilyarël y posa délicatement l'objet.
? Ne le faites pas tomber, dit-elle. Elle se désaccorderait.
? Tiens tiens, dit l'ingénieur. Tu t'es construit une lentille ? variation grossi?re. C'est ça qui donnait la musique que j'ai entendue ?
? Oui, messire Nain, répondit la jeune femme le nez baissé. J'esp?re que je n'ai rien fait de mal.
? Avec cet appareil ? Un jouet ? répétition mélodique n'a rien de dangereux, du moment que son volumisateur n'émet pas d'ondes bthun. Cela pourrait interférer avec les condensateurs statiques.
? Oh, aucun risque, j'ai utilisateur une isolation en arko?de ? un tout petit peu ! ajouta-t-elle avec angoisse. Mais ce n'est pas un répéteur mélodique, messire, elle s'harmonise avec mes mélodies mentales.
? Absurde, railla Mzulchond. Personne ne sait synchroniser une lentille-variante avec des cycles conceptuels mentaux. Personne n'y est jamais parvenu.
? Je ne sais rien de tout cela, messire Nain, répondit Lilyarël en se tordant les mains de nervosité. J'ai simplement inversé l'émetteur-duum pour qu'il annule les ondes demi-ektar, et ça a fonctionné. Puis-je le reprendre ?
? Attends un dzum, répondit l'ingénieur en levant la main et en étudiant l'appareil de plus pr?s. Inverser l'émetteur duum annule les dmi-ektars ? Oui? oui, je vois comment cela pourrait fonctionner. C'est peut-?tre ce qui me manquait pour accorder ma géode spirituelle ? l'essence de Nirnpith ! ?
Tandis que Mzulchond se retournait, galvanisé, pour rapporter la lentille-variante ? son atelier, l'Elfe saisit un levier ? deux mains et le frappa ? la nuque. L'architecte tonal tomba mort, et Lilyarël reprit son appareil brillant.
? Je ne l'ai jamais aimé, murmura-t-elle tout bas. Il puait toujours l'huile dwemer. ?
Elle ouvrit ensuite les volets d'un évent, y rampa et descendit dans les profondeurs de la ville dwemer.
? Je vais aller rejoindre les Sous-Mer, et je ne reviendrai jamais. ?
Sur ces derni?res paroles, elle alluma sa lentille-variante, qui s'hamonisa aussitôt avec ses mélodies mentales.
Die Schneeelfin und die Variationslinse

Mzulchond der Musikarchitekt hatte zwanzig Jahre damit verbracht, die große Animusgeode zu stimmen, die er in Innerduathand gefunden hatte, um sie im Einklang mit der Präzession der beiden Äquinoktien zu bringen und so die Nirnpith-Essenz einfangen zu können. Die Vibrationsaffinität der Geode war ihm jedoch weiter ein Rätsel, und so warf er eines Tages seine Dämpfer beiseite und ging aus der Werkstätte in Richtung Küche, um sich dort einen Chal-Aufguss zu bereiten.
Auf dem Weg dorthin hörte er säuselnde Musik, die schlagartig aufhörte, als er die Küche betrat. Sein Hausmädchen, eine Schneeelfin namens Lilyarel, zog ihre Hände von hinter dem Dampfgrill hervor und schaute wie ertappt auf.
?Ich habe Musik gehört, Lilyarel?, sagte Mzulchond. ?Was habt Ihr da gerade hinter dem Kalorefaktor versteckt??
?Nichts Wichtiges, Herr Dwemer?, antwortete das Mädchen. ?Nur etwas, was ich mir zum Zeitvertreib gebastelt habe.?
?Was? Wart Ihr schon wieder an meinem Werkzeugschrank? Zeigt mir, was Ihr da habt.?
Zögernd griff die Schneeelfin hinter den Dampfgrill und zog einen faustgroßen Gegenstand aus güldenem Metall hervor, auf dessen Blende kristallene Drehknöpfe glitzerten. Mzulchond streckte seine offene Hand aus, und Lilyarel legte den Gegenstand behutsam hinein. ?Lasst sie nicht fallen?, sagte sie. ?Sonst wird sie verstimmt.?
?Sieh an, sieh an?, sagte der Tüftler. ?Ihr habt Euch also eine rudimentäre Tonalvariationslinse gebaut. Habt Ihr damit die Musik gespielt, die ich da gerade gehört habe??
?Ja, Herr Dwemer?, sagte das Mädchen, den Blick zu Boden gewandt. ?Ich hoffe, ich habe nichts Unrechtes getan.?
?Was, mit diesem Gerät? Von solcherlei Melodiewiederholungskram geht keinerlei Gefahr aus, solange keine Bthunwellen aus seinem Lautstärkisierer sickern. So etwas sollte vermieden werden; es könnte die Statikkondensatoren stören.?
?Oh, keine Sorge, ich habe eine Arkoidabschirmung verwendet ? Aber nur so viel wie nötig!?, fügte sie schnell hinzu. ?Doch das ist kein Melodiewiederholer, mein Herr. Das Gerät harmoniert mit meinen mentalen Melodien.?
?Unfug?, schnaubte Mzulchond. ?Niemand kann eine Variantionslinse mit mentalen Konzeptzyklen synchronisieren. Das hat noch nie jemand geschafft.?
?Darüber weiß ich nichts, Herr Dwemer?, sagte Lilyarel und rang sich nervös die Hände. ?Ich habe einfach nur den Duumsender so gepolt, dass er die Demi-Ektar-Wellen negiert, und schon hat alles funktioniert. Kann ich sie jetzt wiederhaben??
?Wartet einen Dzum?, sagte der Tüftler mit erhobener Hand, während er sich das funkelnde Gerät näher ansah. ?Wenn man den Duumsender umpolt, kann man die Demi-Ektar negieren? Ja ? Ja, das könnte wirklich funktionieren. Das könnte das sein, was mir noch zur Anpassung meiner Animusgeode an die Nirnpith-Essenz fehlt!?
Als Mzulchond sich aufgeregt umdrehte und mit der Variationslinse in seine Werkstätte gehen wollte, hob die Elfin mit beiden Händen eine Sperrstrebe auf und schlug ihm diese auf den Hinterkopf. Der Musikarchitekt fiel tot zu Boden, und Lilyarel hob ihr funkelndes Gerät auf. ?Konnte ihn noch nie leiden?, fauchte sie. ?Hat immer nach altem Dwemeröl gemüffelt.?
Dann öffnete sie die die bronzenen Gitter eines Lüftungsschachts, kletterte hinein und hinab in die Tiefen der Dwemerstadt. ?Nun werde ich wohl eine der Untermer. Auf Nimmerwiedersehen.? Und mit diesen Worten aktivierte sie ihre Variationslinse, die sofort mit ihren mentalen Melodien zu harmonieren begann.
